Maro Itoje has praised the courage of his England rugby teammate Tom Curry after the conclusion of the investigation into Curry’s allegation that Bongi Mbonambi directed a racial slur at him egame
World Rugby announced a conclusion to their investigation into the matter this morning citing a lack of evidence, a decision described by both England head coach Steve Borthwick and the Rugby egame Football Union (RFU) as “deeply disappointing” egame
Curry had accused Mbonambi, the South Africa hooker, of calling him a “white c***” during last Saturday’s final, and separately having also made a remark towards him during the autumn international egame between the two nations last November egame
Both England and Sale Sharks have condemned the abuse and threats that their player has received as a result of making his allegation during last Saturday’s World Cup semi-final egame
And Itoje has said it is “disgraceful” that “the innocent party” in the matter had been targeted in such a way egame

“He is the victim of the situation egame
For him to have this abuse is disgraceful egame
“I think Tom has been tremendous egame
He’s been courageous to do what he’s done in the manner he’s done it, through proper channels, conducting himself in a manner he should be proud of egame
“Definitely as teammates, we are proud of him egame
To do that isn’t easy egame
To make a statement like that isn’t easy egame
To call out stuff like that isn’t easy egame
“As you’ve seen this week, when you do something courageous like that, you put yourself out there egame
He’s been absolutely fantastic in that regard egame
”The RFU issued a statement immediately after World Rugby released their decision saying they were “deeply disappointed” that a full disciplinary hearing had not been held egame
That sentiment was echoed by Borthwick a day ahead of England’s bronze medal match against Argentina egame
“The RFU expressed great disappointment at World Rugby’s decision and that disappointment is shared by Tom, his teammates, the management team and everyone associated with this team,” Borthwick stressed egame
“Tom Curry has done nothing wrong, let’s be clear on that egame
We have got a victim of a situation who has not been able to have his voice heard egame
“By World Rugby’s decision, they have denied the victim of the situation, Tom Curry, [a chance] to have his voice heard egame
That’s where the disappointment really comes in egame
”Mbonambi has been picked to start for South Africa in the World Cup final against New Zealand egame
Curry, meanwhile, will start on the blindside for England at the Stade de France on Friday night egame

Owen Farrell has condemned the egame online vilification of Tom Curry after the England flanker alleged he was racially abused in Saturday’s World Cup semi-final defeat by South Africa egame
England are furious that Curry has been targeted egame online for claiming to referee Ben O’Keeffe that he had been called a “white c***” by Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi egame
World Rugby is examining audio and video footage from the Stade de France clash as part of its investigation into the incident which is still ongoing, but in the meantime Curry has been the victim of a social media pile-on described by his club Sale as “disgusting” egame
A visibly angry Farrell on Wednesday defended his team-mate, who wins his 50th cap in Friday’s bronze final against Argentina egame
“Tom has been first class this week, like he always is egame
He’s one of the most honest, most hard working blokes I’ve ever played with,” England captain Farrell said egame
“What isn’t understandable is the amount of abuse he’s got egame
The effect that has on him is the bit that I, and we, really don’t understand egame
“And I know it seems to be going more and more like this, but it shouldn’t be, it shouldn’t be egame
“You are dealing with people, with human beings egame
Just because you’re saying stuff on your phone or behind a computer screen doesn’t make it acceptable egame
I don’t think it’s acceptable egame
“This doesn’t make me look fondly at engaging with people outside of the people that are close to you egame
”Head coach Steve Borthwick has made it clear that Curry has been unjustly thrust into the eye of the storm in a doubling down of England’s claim that the Sale forward was racially abused by Mbonambi egame
“This is not a Tom Curry incident egame
Somebody said something in a game that he has reported,” Borthwick said egame
“Now this is a World Rugby and SA Rugby matter to deal with, not an England rugby nor a Tom Curry matter egame
”Curry continues in the back row, although he shifts from openside to blindside flanker as one of 10 changes – eight in personnel – made to the side to face Argentina egame
Borthwick insists he had no hesitation in standing Curry down for the rematch of the Pool D opener which England won despite having the 25-year-old sent off in the third minute for a dangerous tackle egame
“The way Tom play means he has more involvements than any other player on the pitch egame
And they are physically powerful involvements,” Borthwick said egame
“When he came off the pitch against South Africa he was cut and bloodied and that’s exactly how Tom Curry plays egame
“I chatted to him early in the week about how he was physically with another six-day turnaround and he looked straight at me and point blank said: ‘I am desperate to play on Friday night’ egame
“This guy wants to play egame
There is no doubt in my mind he wants to be out there and the way he has prepared through the week has been incredible egame
“But that’s Tom Curry egame
It’s the way he does it every single week so I couldn’t be more proud of him egame
”With no indication of when World Rugby’s inquiry will conclude, Mbonambi will take part in Saturday’s World Cup final against New Zealand with a cloud hanging over him egame
He has completed the last two matches – fierce battles against France and England – and given the lack of front line hooker cover, is set to play another 80 minutes against the All Blacks egame
South Africa assistant coach Felix Jones said: “Bongi has come through both of those games fine egame
Any player who is getting ready to play in a World Cup final won’t moan about how many minutes they’ve had egame
They’ll be ready to go egame
