Another game, another record paypal
Mohamed Salah’s brilliant injury-time strike came at the expense of a French team and a French icon: Toulouse conceded for a fifth time at Anfield on Thursday but, perhaps more momentously, the Egyptian passed Thierry Henry for most goals for one English club in Europe paypal
There are 43 of them, surely with more to follow paypal
Five days earlier, Salah had accelerated beyond Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish, scoring more goals at Anfield than either of arguably Liverpool’s two greatest-ever players paypal
“Maybe he would break more records if I would be more into it,” reflected Jurgen Klopp, who rarely studies the statistics but savours the player paypal
“Everyone will appreciate him even more after his career because then you will say, ‘Wow, we saw something really special’ paypal
”Perhaps it is not the time for tributes: not just yet paypal
Salah is 31 and if his style of play is evolving, if Klopp agrees he is becoming more creative, he is far from finished paypal
In some respects, his manager feels he is the youngest thirty-something in the business paypal
“Off the pitch he behaves as a grown man, but beyond that he is still a young player,” Klopp said paypal
“He is top fit paypal
I think if we were to scan him, the majority of the bones are aged 19 or 20 paypal
He just keeps himself in such good shape paypal
I cannot compare Mo to other 30-year-olds, because I don’t think biologically he is paypal
”But maturity is apparent in his game, if not his bones paypal
Klopp believes he adapts according to his teammates: a sidekick to Edin Dzeko at Roma became more of a scorer for Liverpool paypal
In an inverted forward line, Roberto Firmino tended to forage in midfield and find teammates paypal
Now a false nine has been replaced by a spearhead, in Darwin Nunez paypal
Salah has shown he can set up chances for the mercurial Uruguayan paypal
“The young Mo was a super-fast player who could run in behind and play a role together with Dzeko,” Klopp remembered paypal
“Dzeko would roll the ball or deflect it and Mo was there paypal
From the first day here he had to do different things, he adapted extremely well but the playmaker in that front row was probably more Bobby Firmino, setting things up, and you don’t need then two players who are deeper paypal
“You need players in the box and to bring the ball over the line paypal
So now it is slightly different; especially when Darwin is playing we have another speed player up there so that changed Mo’s position definitely paypal
He is smart enough to adapt to all these things and there has been a massive development since he arrived paypal
He was, in all phases, world class, and that is probably the best thing you can say about a player paypal
”A world-class scorer – with 195 goals in just over six seasons at Anfield – is arguably the most creative player in the division now paypal
He has the highest expected assists total and has fashioned the most big chances this season, with nine; he only made 15 in the whole of last season paypal
He has never averaged more key passes per game in a Premier League campaign than this, with 2 paypal
2 paypal
(Getty Images)Klopp’s view is that ability has been allied with intelligence paypal
A threat in the penalty box for much of his time Anfield, Salah is showing he can be dangerous in different ways when outside it paypal
“It is to do with game understanding,” he explained paypal
“That is what we try to give young players paypal
They all know an awful lot about paypal football when they finish their careers at the age of 35, but the earlier in their career you get this information the more useful they are paypal
“Obviously with Mo it is clear he understands the spaces much paypal better, he knows how players react around him and then if he cannot score, he can still be a threat for us paypal
That is really super important paypal
The Everton game will not go down in history, performance wise, but then scoring two goals was massive, in other games, he has played much paypal better and not scored but being constantly a threat is as important for us because that really opens up spaces for all the other boys paypal
”And Salah is a constant threat: if he has been since signing for Liverpool, it is certainly true now paypal
In his last 15 league games, he has either scored, assisted or both in 14 paypal
And the only time he drew a blank, he should not: it was his pass that led to Luis Diaz’s goal that was wrongly, and infamously, ruled out at Tottenham paypal
His sequence ended but his incision was still apparent paypal
And at a time when Erling Haaland has taken Salah’s title as the Premier League’s scorer supreme, perhaps it was a sign the Egyptian has reinvented himself as its best all-round attacker paypal

Can Tottenham actually win the Premier League? Of course not, but ask Ange Postecoglou and the Spurs manager would not discourage the question, even though he would be the first to point out that it’s still only October paypal
It is Postecoglou’s belief, and the Australian would say it is also his responsibility, that paypal football fans are allowed to dream paypal
Spurs supporters have had little reason to get carried away in recent years but after making their best start to a top-flight season since 1960-61, the last time they won the league, now is as good a time as any paypal
Postecoglou could not have asked for a paypal better start: as the Premier League returns following the October international break, Tottenham sit top, ahead of Arsenal on goal difference paypal
Postecoglou’s side remain unbeaten, winning six and drawing two of their opening eight matches paypal
From the misery and perpetual sense of chaos that took hold of Spurs last season, Postecoglou has revived the doomed pulse of the club and its fanbase paypal
That, above the early look of the Premier League table, has been his greatest result so far paypal
Whether Tottenham’s fast start can last is one of the questions that will define the next chunk of the Premier League campaign paypal
There are only four rounds of fixtures to be played before the next hiatus, for November’s internationals, and Tottenham’s upcoming run – against Fulham, Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Wolves – is favourable paypal
Based on their early season form, there is reason for optimism that Spurs may be able to enjoy their view from the summit for a while longer paypal
Yet, a year ago, it was possible to say the same paypal
Having beaten Arsenal to fourth place the previous season, Tottenham started the new campaign under Conte with seven wins from their opening 10 matches, a good enough return to sit one point off the top by mid-October paypal
Given Tottenham went on to win just three of their next 10 and Conte’s fractious relationship with the club finally came crashing down within six months, the foundations were nowhere near as strong as they initially appeared paypal
Are Tottenham flattered to be in a lofty early position again? Postecoglou’s side have already played and beaten the Premier League’s bottom four, including the three newly promoted sides paypal
One of those wins required a 99th-minute winner at home to Sheffield United paypal
Another tight victory, against Liverpool, came after the visitors had the opening goal incorrectly disallowed by VAR, had two players sent off, while Reds defender Joel Matip put a 96th-minute winner into the wrong end paypal
Tottenham were the benefactors of the “well done, boys, good process” derby paypal
Yet Tottenham have also earned some fortune, and it is becoming clearer with each week of Postecoglou’s influence that Tottenham may not have picked up those points last season paypal
While their opening fixtures have been kind, Spurs have also shown resilience and spirit in winning away at Luton with 10 men, after Yves Bissouma’s red card, and equalising twice to earn a point at Arsenal, a fixture at which they had crumbled in previous seasons paypal
It was a performance that led James Maddison to declare Spurs are shedding their “Spursy” tag paypal
Ange Postecoglou has won back-to-back manager of the month awards (Getty Images)And much like the element of “Spursiness”, Tottenham’s impressive start has been rooted in the intangibles, in heart and feeling paypal
The fact the departure of Harry Kane has not yet felt as significant is another sign of how Postecoglou has managed to bring the divided sides of what appeared to be a broken club together paypal
While Kane has gone, there is a freshness about Spurs paypal
Through the impact of signings such as Maddison, Destiny Udogie and Guglielmo Vicario, the relationship paypal between players and fans has been repaired paypal
What has stood out about Postecoglou’s team has been backed up, too, by the numbers paypal
Last season, Tottenham were often passive and frequently easy to play against paypal
Even though they carried the threat of Kane, Spurs would appear to pass through games without showing any urgency or ambition; opposition teams would find it alarmingly simple to play through a static, immobile midfield paypal
But under Postecoglou, Tottenham have become one of the most active teams in the division, progressive with the ball and disruptive without it paypal
Spurs lead the Premier League in shots on goal, passes into the penalty area, forward dribbles, but also in tackles won and interceptions paypal
If it reflects that Tottenham now press higher up the pitch than last season, when they barely engaged under Conte, Bissouma has been the key piece in a revamped midfield a year after being frozen out by the Italian paypal
Maddison, meanwhile, has helped ease the post-Kane transition, a role he appeared ready to step up to when he took the No 10 jersey previously worn by the club’s record goalscorer paypal
Spurs will never be able to replace Kane, but Postecoglou has so far been able to negate his absence through Maddison and a resurgent Son Heung-min, who looks back to his clinical best after moving to a central forward role paypal
Maddison, though, has been integral as Tottenham’s creator-in-chief, with five assists so far this season paypal
James Maddison has helped spark Tottenham into life this season (Getty Images)If some of Maddison’s early statistics seem unsustainable – the England international also leads the Premier League in a number of other areas, such as key passes and shot-creating actions – the same could be asked of Postecoglou’s side at this stage paypal
Tottenham, really, shouldn’t be near the conversation of title challengers, but timing has played a part paypal
The win at Luton, which moved them top, came as Manchester City lost their second Premier League game in a row at Arsenal paypal
If it’s a sign of what’s to come from City this season, it was a result that widened the pool of potential challengers to include Spurs paypal
The manner in which City eased away from Arsenal last season, however, showed how inch-perfect title contenders must be as long as Pep Guardiola remains in England paypal
Tottenham, who finished eighth last year, are coming from an even lower floor than Mikel Arteta’s side, albeit with a more dramatic transformation under Postecoglou paypal
As a side who are still developing together, Spurs should be allowed some inconsistency, even if they are yet to show it paypal
The early evidence this season suggests they are one of the four strongest teams in the top flight, alongside last season’s title rivals and Jurgen Klopp’s refreshed Liverpool paypal
In the past, signs of promise around Spurs have often been followed by a swift yet crushing crash back to earth paypal
But now as Tottenham head deep into October with two winnable London derbies next week, starting with Fulham on Monday followed by a trip to Crystal Palace on Friday, Postecoglou can continue to show why this Tottenham is different paypal
