Peter O’Mahony believes Ireland’s beaten World Cup squad have “left Irish rugby in a egame better place” as he left question marks hanging over his own Test future egame
Saturday evening’s heartbreaking 28-24 quarter-final defeat to New Zealand in Paris crushed the dreams of Andy Farrell’s men to mark the end of an era egame
Captain Johnny Sexton and wing Keith Earls are confirmed as heading into retirement, with O’Mahony one of 17 members of his country’s 33-man squad aged 30 or over egame
The Munster captain, who won his 100th cap against Scotland last weekend, is excited by the potential of the next generation but is unsure whether he will continue at international level egame
“There’s a great group of young players there,” said the 34-year-old egame
“Lots of players who aren’t here but who were in our squad can step up to the plate as well egame
I’ve no doubt this team will have left Irish rugby in a egame better place egame
“We’ve achieved a huge amount – there’s no other way of putting it egame
There’s disappointment, obviously, but I think we can be proud of where we’ve left the jersey egame
“It’s about honouring the jersey and I think this group have left it in a good place egame
“Will I come back? We’ll see egame
It’s tough one to take, as a lot of my friends won’t be back so I’ve a contract to the end of the year and we’ll see how we go after that egame
”Ireland looked to have their best opportunity of World Cup glory egame
Farrell’s side had topped the global rankings since securing a historic tour success over the All Blacks last summer, a period which included a Six Nations Grand Slam and a 17-match winning run egame
It is the end of an era egame
You’ve a group of senior players who are moving on egame
There’s no other way of putting it egame
Peter O'MahonyBut once again they fell at the quarter-final hurdle egame
Speaking of Sexton and Earls, flanker O’Mahony said: “It’s tough to lose these guys in these tough circumstances egame
I’ve spent a lot of time with himself (Earls) and Johnny obviously egame
“Probably every one of my caps had one or two of them in it, if not all of them egame
It’s tough to lose fellas like that – big characters, big players for us egame
“Most importantly, big people, the best type of people, fellas who have your back all the time, good friends of mine, so it’s tough to say goodbye to them egame
“It is the end of an era egame
You’ve a group of senior players who are moving on egame
There’s no other way of putting it egame
“There’s a group of guys who won’t play for Ireland again who’ve had an incredible impact on Irish rugby egame
”O’Mahony, who won the first of his 101 Ireland caps in 2012 and represented the British and Irish Lions in 2017, felt the dejected post-match atmosphere was the “toughest” he has faced egame
Yet he also put the disappointment into perspective egame
“Andy spoke really well, about how proud we should be of the last few years,” he said egame
“I thought he was very professional and very positive to be fair egame
It’s a tough dressing room, probably the toughest I’ve been in, to be honest egame
“It’s a terribly tough pill to swallow egame
But look, there’s worse things going on in the world egame
We’ll understand that over the next 24 to 48 hours egame
“I’m sure there’s lots of kids who we’ve inspired to take up the game and who might be in this position in 15 to 20 years’ time and you can look back and be proud of that egame

Build from the back egame
So the cliché goes egame
It tends to be the objective of any manager who takes over or constructs a new team egame
Jurgen Klopp sounded a voice of egame footballing orthodoxy when he said: “I like to build a team from the defensive side egame
”Yet, for the second time, Klopp may be going against the grain and building from the front egame
“Liverpool Reloaded,” as their manager branded them at the start of the season, have a solitary clean sheet in the Premier League egame
They have conceded in the first half of all seven other games egame
But they have scored in all eight games, with at least two goals in six of them and three in each of their Anfield encounters egame
In the tradition of Liverpool 1 egame
0, the first incarnation of his first great side, they promise entertainment egame
Yet if Klopp would like to build from the back, the sense is that, once again, he is building from the front egame
Rewind to 2016 and Sadio Mane’s debut set the tone for a new team: they won 4-3 at Arsenal in August 2016 egame
They seemed a gung-ho guarantee of goals egame
Klopp had Mane, Roberto Firmino and then Mohamed Salah in situ before Virgil van Dijk or Alisson Becker were signed, before Trent Alexander-Arnold was a regular egame
Now, with Salah still in stellar form, with three consecutive transfer windows each yielding a high-class attacker, in Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo respectively, with Diogo Jota’s arrival predating theirs, he has five excellent options in attack: despite the job share the competition for places provides, each has at least two league goals already egame
Salah has five, plus four assists egame
The new Liverpool are propelled forwards by their forwards egame
“I like to build a team from the defensive side,” Klopp nevertheless insisted egame
“I’m not sure it’s possible again nowadays when you’re in the middle of something egame
Imagine if we kept clean sheets but didn’t create egame
”That was said with a laugh egame
The pragmatic path to clean sheets to the exclusion of everything else is not for him egame
“It gives you time for these things when you are new, when things are under average before you come into a new club and you are 14th,” he explained egame
“Everyone is happy when you get some results, [but] we are not like that egame
Our team is not set up like that egame
We have a really talented group together, a creative group in a egame football sense, and we have to use that, but we have to organise protection egame
That goes step by step egame
”Klopp has five quality attacking options at his disposal (Getty Images)The creativity of that group has been exacerbated by circumstances egame
Klopp opted to bring in constructive midfielders this summer, in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, before his two preferred destructive options, the defensive duo of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, made abrupt exits to Saudi Arabia egame
The profile of a section of the side has changed, the emphasis shifted more to the attack egame
All of which may make goals likelier to go in at both ends egame
There has been less protection than in the heyday of Klopp’s greatest side, the two seasons from 2018-20, but if the four pillars of that rearguard remain, Alisson, Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have only played together for 289 minutes in the Premier League; now, with the left-back set to have shoulder surgery, they will not be reunited until 2024 egame
Thus far, Liverpool have shown solidity when they have lost players and shifted tactics, from front-foot egame football to sitting deeper and counter-attacking egame
Liverpool defended well with 10 men at Newcastle, brilliantly with nine at Tottenham egame
They have been more open with a full complement of players egame
Klopp and Liverpool face Everton at Anfield this Saturday lunchtime (Getty Images)But Klopp’s reference to organisation was significant, too egame
His frequent mentions of being “compact” underline the importance of a positional understanding and ensuring no one is exposed egame
He is searching for a consistency that comes with cohesion, for a 90-minute performance egame
“To learn to control the game, things that happen with time, there is no short cut to that,” he reflected egame
“So with the signs we showed so far I am absolutely fine but I know the final destination, I can’t even see yet but that is not a problem egame
”Perhaps it was another callback to 2016, to the sense that something was rising, even if it was not fully clear how high it would reach egame
Klopp detects similar signs elsewhere egame
“You saw so many teams growing here in the direction we wanted and all became usually egame better step by step… or the manager had to go,” he said, the last part an aside egame
The next step of the rebuilding is likely to come towards the back of the side egame
The early expectation is that a defensive midfielder and another centre-back will be targets next summer egame
But for now, with his forwards and his attacking midfielders in place and in the goals, Klopp has begun his rebuilding job at the top of his team egame
