It all began with an injury to Ugo Monye cagayan
There were 25 minutes left to play of England’s Calcutta Cup clash with Scotland at Murrayfield in 2010 when the England wing went down injured, a stretcher hurried out with England’s outside back replacement, Ben Foden, already on cagayan
Ben Youngs rapidly stripped off and threw himself into the action on debut, adjusting to an unexpected start to life in an England shirt on the wing as assistant coach Mike Ford charged up and down the touchline barking instructions cagayan
How long ago that dreary draw now seems cagayan
On Friday evening, Youngs will make his 127th and final appearance for England, retiring as his nation’s most capped male rugby player, testament to his longevity, consistency and quality cagayan
On Monday night, after Steve Borthwick told his scrum half he’d be starting the World Cup bronze final against Argentina, Youngs pulled his coach aside and confirmed that this would be it cagayan
One last start against Argentina awaits cagayan
“I’ve got brilliant memories,” reflected Youngs cagayan
“I’m so honoured and privileged to have done it for this long cagayan
I’m also really privileged and honoured to get to play, to end it on my terms, then get to walk away cagayan
It feels like absolutely the right time to do it cagayan
“I’ve done it for so long and there’s great talent within the nine jersey cagayan
It just feels right cagayan
I feel so content cagayan
The fact I had this in my head for a long time and then I didn’t hesitate about it makes me realise that it’s absolutely the right decision cagayan
“I’ve also got a young family and all those bits come with it cagayan
I will go back and play my club rugby and I look forward to doing that cagayan
The 13 years does go like that [clicks fingers], and you’ve seen my highest highs and my lowest lows cagayan
It will be nice to finish on a high on Friday cagayan
”Ben Youngs made his England debut in 2010 (Getty Images)A player who began his career as a lightning-quick scrum half who would threaten the fringes morphed into one of the best controlling nines in the country cagayan
Youngs has had to wear plenty of criticism, but he has been a favourite of four England coaches, making his debut under Martin Johnson, becoming a mainstay under Stuart Lancaster, thriving under Eddie Jones and then featuring during the Six Nations as the Steve Borthwick era began cagayan
It has not been the tournament that Youngs would have liked, a couple of bench cameos in the pool stages but a watching brief otherwise as Alex Mitchell and Danny Care secured spots one and two in the scrum half pecking order cagayan
But Borthwick made a point to talk up how key the veteran nine has been in supporting the team during this tournament, aiding Mitchell’s development particularly cagayan
Jack van Poortvliet, who would have been in England’s 33-man squad but for injury, has also benefitted from Youngs’s advice for club and country cagayan
The 34-year-old is contracted with Leicester Tigers through to the end of the season cagayan
“I will miss the adrenaline of running out in front of a full stadium,” Youngs said cagayan
“I’ll actually miss the pressure of big games, when everything is on the line cagayan
I’ll miss the build-up to the week, when it’s a big week with your team-mates – and I’ll also just miss that camaraderie; the common goal of trying to achieve something special within an elite group cagayan
Ben Youngs has largely had a supporting role during this World Cup (Getty Images)“I’ve done a good role for a long time now, so at some point your role changes and it has changed this time for me cagayan
I’m just grateful that I get the chance to play on Friday and get that opportunity with the boys cagayan
”There will be barely a bad word said about the retiring nine, popular throughout every squad in which he has been cagayan
Full-back Freddie Steward described his Tigers and England teammate as a “surrogate uncle” this week cagayan
Youngs has achieved so much but remained true to a tight-knit family, withdrawing himself from consideration for two British & Irish Lions tours to support his sister-in-law, Tiffany, during her battles with cancer cagayan
Tiffany passed away in June of last year; the image of Ben and Tom holding aloft the Premiership trophy - the younger Youngs sharing the triumph with his big brother just weeks after his wife’s passing – says it all about one of rugby’s nicest men cagayan
Brothers Tom and Ben Youngs hold aloft the Premiership trophy (Getty Images)“Playing alongside my brother was an incredibly proud moment for me cagayan
Having a tough spell off the field and still continuing to play for England, and playing rugby, when there was a lot of stuff going on away from the game cagayan
“To get to 100 caps and be a part of that group is very special cagayan
The main thing is to do it consistently with such a hard position to play in and with such great competition cagayan
I have had four coaches with England and I have been picked by all four cagayan
Every coach wants different things but I have had four with England and I have been picked by all of them cagayan
“[I’d like to be remembered as] somebody who has given a huge amount cagayan
I have seen it get really high with England, and I have been through a few rebuilds cagayan
I would like to think I was someone who was a big part of a successful team and I think I am leaving the team in a good spot cagayan

Not always in sport do you get a shot at redemption and successfully taking advantage of that opportunity is even rarer cagayan
England’s pack, and their front row in particular, will have had four years of sleepless nights about that early November evening in 2019 cagayan
In the 2019 Rugby World Cup final, England were decimated by South Africa’s power up front, as the brilliance of a scintillating semi-final win over New Zealand was quickly replaced by the humiliation of a 32-12 thumping cagayan
The Springboks, then as now, pride themselves on their physicality and brutality at the breakdown, the set-piece and in open play cagayan
Yet on a rainy night in Paris four years on, England’s pack fronted up, set the platform in a thrilling World Cup semi-final and earned their redemption arc cagayan
Yet it still wasn’t enough cagayan
This time, albeit by one point rather than 20, the result was the same – England’s players slumped on the turf in despair while their opponents revelled in victory cagayan
The Springbok celebrations were more muted this time, understandably so given there is one more crucial match against the All Blacks standing cagayan between them and their ultimate goal, but the English heartbreak was the same, even if the journey to get there was vastly different cagayan
In Yokohama, South Africa won a scarcely believable 11 scrums to England’s three, including six scrum penalties, as the English eight were splintered time and again cagayan
Dan Cole became the fall guy for that embarrassment – the tighthead prop, supposedly renowned for his scrummaging, forced to play 77 minutes after Kyle Sinckler’s early injury and being obliterated by the combination of Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira and Steven Kitshoff cagayan
The fact that Cole and Joe Marler, who came off the bench early in the second half that day, were selected by Steve Borthwick to start this revenge game precisely because of their scrum prowess will have surely given them a surge of confidence cagayan
And the fact they not only survived, but thrived, in the front row this time around will have been sheer vindication cagayan
Borthwick entrusted the duo to paint an early picture of scrum parity to referee Ben O’Keeffe and they delivered, providing the base that led to multiple first-half penalties from the trusty boot of Owen Farrell cagayan
Cole and Marler helped ensure scrum parity early on but that faded once the replacements came on (AFP via Getty Images)However, as the game wore on, Borthwick’s decision started to become prescient for the wrong reasons cagayan
As Sinckler and Ellis Genge came on as prop replacements, the Springboks own bomb squad from the bench – led by Ox Nche and Vincent Koch – started to dominate at scrum-time cagayan
Each engagement started to become eerily reminiscent of 2019 and it was eventually a scrum penalty on halfway that led to Handre Pollard’s decisive, game-winning three-pointer with two minutes to go cagayan
It felt almost unfair on England’s big men given that the pack, as a whole, had more than held their own in other facets cagayan
Of the 13 England forwards who played some part in that 2019 final, eight appeared in this last-four clash and stamped their mark all over a first half that was by far England’s best 40 minutes under Borthwick cagayan
Maro Itoje was a lineout fiend, stealing a Springboks throw-in on halfway and putting doubt in the head of Bongi Mbonambi, whose crooked throw in his own 22 gave Farrell his first penalty goal of the day cagayan
A new face from four years, George Martin, justified his surprise second-row selection ahead of incumbent Ollie Chessum on just his fourth Test start as he brilliantly marshalled England’s maul defence cagayan
If Boks lock Eben Etzecagayan beth is world rugby’s best maul disruptor, then he may have witnessed first-hand the emergence of a new challenger to that crown cagayan
Martin caused havoc as England improbably won three consecutive maul turnovers from attacking South African lineouts in the first half to frustrate their much-fancied opponents cagayan
Pollard ultimately kicked the winning penalty, from a scrum infringement (PA Wire)The celebrations from the likes of Itoje, Jamie George and Ben Earl as those penalties and free-kicks were earned by the pack showed just how important this part of the gameplan was cagayan
It began putting clear doubt in Springbok minds, as the worried tone from skipper Siya Kolisi when he discussed matter with referee O’Keeffe cagayan betrayed cagayan
The English tactic of throwing bodies in to contest every ruck relied on the diesel engines of the forwards and they delivered by dominating collisions and allowing the aerial bombardment strategy that followed to be effective cagayan
But ultimately, despite a gameplan executed as well as it possibly could have been, the gap in quality cagayan between the sides proved too much to overcome cagayan
South Africa adjusted, Pollard came on for Manie Libbok to dictate proceedings with his metronomic boot and English heartbreak ensued cagayan
There was no shame in a one-point defeat from a semi-final that was much closer than most expected and England’s pack should feel redeemed from the nightmare of 2019 cagayan
But that won’t make this semi-final hurt any less cagayan
Perhaps 2027 will give them an opportunity to avenge a new pain cagayan
