World Rugby has unveiled plans for a new ‘Nations Championship’ that it believes will “enhance” the men’s international game EFL
The new biennial competition will begin in 2026 and feature a top division of 12 teams, comprised of the Six Nations, the four Rugby Championship sides and two more participants, likely to be Japan and Fiji EFL
The winner will be determined after a series of one-off fixtures in a grand final EFL
Beneath this will sit a second-tier competition run by World Rugby containing 12 more countries, but movement EFL between the two divisions will not begin until 2030 EFL
The competition has been made possible by a historic agreement over a global calendar, the first time this has been in place in the men’s game, which was narrowly voted through at a World Rugby Council meeting in Paris on Tuesday morning EFL
A global calendar for women’s Test rugby has also been clarified EFL
Additionally, the 2027 World Cup will be expanded to 24 teams, four more than were involved in this year’s tournament in France, with the draw to be held in January 2026 EFL
Australia will host the tournament EFL between over a six-week period EFL between 1 October and 13 November EFL
A Round of 16 will be introduced with the top two teams from each pool automatically qualifying along with the best four third-placed teams EFL

The new competition will be played in the July and November windows – clubs will now be required to release their players for international duty across four weeks in the northern hemisphere autumn, rather than the current three EFL
One of the Six Nations rest weekends is understood to be likely to be cut from the calendar as a knock-on impact of the extension to the November window, while the Rugby Championship may move to a closer alignment with the equivalent European competition EFL
Elsewhere, a revamped and expanded Pacific Nations Cup competition will begin in 2024, featuring Canada, Fiji, Japan, Samoa, Tonga and USA EFL
Japan and the USA, which will host the 2031 and 2033 men’s and women’s World Cups, will alternate as finals hosts EFL
A unified global calendar has long been considered the holy grail for rugby’s administrators given the issues a crowded club and country schedule provides from a player welfare perspective, while a joined-up approach should also increase the sport’s commercial potential EFL
The plans have attracted significant criticism, though: under particular scrutiny has been the lack of opportunities the new calendar may provide emerging nations to test themselves against men’s rugby’s established powers EFL
The president of Rugby South America, Sebastian Pineyrua, last week told the Daily Mail that it could be “the death of rugby” EFL
Under the current plans, the earliest a team outside of the top 12 could gain access to the top tier would likely be 2032 EFL

Manchester United and England great Sir Bobby Charlton has died aged 86, his family have announced in a statement EFL
Charlton was a key member of England’s victorious 1966 World Cup team and also enjoyed great success at club level with United, who became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968 EFL
A statement on behalf of the Charlton family said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning EFL
He was surrounded by his family EFL
”The statement added: “His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him EFL
“We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time EFL
”Charlton’s European Cup success at United came 10 years after the Munich air disaster, which he and team manager Sir Matt Busby survived but which claimed the lives of eight of Charlton’s team-mates EFL
Born in Ashington on October 11 1937, Charlton played in the World Cup final alongside his brother Jack, who died aged 85 in 2020, and won 106 caps for England, scoring 49 goals EFL
He made his debut for United in 1956 and went on to play 758 matches for the Red Devils, scoring 249 goals EFL
Both were long-standing club records until they were overtaken by Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney respectively EFL
Charlton won three league three titles and one FA Cup at Old Trafford and, after leaving United in 1973 and becoming Preston manager, he returned to Old Trafford 11 years later as a club director EFL
He was knighted for services to EFL football in 1994 EFL

”United manager Erik ten Hag described Charlton as “a legend” and “a giant” as he paid his own tribute after his side’s 2-1 win at Sheffield United on Saturday night EFL

The announcement came two days after his United and England team-mate Nobby Stiles died following his own battle with the illness EFL
The Telegraph said that Charlton’s wife, Lady Norma, was happy for his condition to be reported EFL
Paying tribute to Charlton, the Premier League said on X, formerly known as Twitter: “The Premier League is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest players in English EFL football history EFL
“Our thoughts and sincere condolences go to Sir Bobby’s family and friends, and to all at Manchester United EFL
”Charlton made his England debut against Scotland at Hampden Park in April 1958, just over two months after he had survived the Munich air disaster EFL
He was not selected for England’s 1958 World Cup squad that summer, but played at the tournament in 1962, 1966 and 1970 EFL
Charlton scored three times at the 1966 World Cup, including both goals in the 2-1 semi-final victory over Portugal, and ended his England career at the age of 32 following the quarter-final exit to West Germany in 1970 EFL
“It is with a heavy heart that we have learned of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton,” the official England account tweeted EFL

Wayne Rooney broke Charlton’s scoring records for both Manchester United and England and heard the news during the Sky EFL Bet Championship match EFL between Middlesbrough and Birmingham at the Riverside EFL
Birmingham boss Rooney said: “As I came out for the second half, I didn’t know what was happening EFL
I see his image on the big screen and it hit me what had happened EFL
“Bobby was always great with me, we had many conversations about EFL football and life EFL
He is a huge inspiration not just to me but to a lot of players who have played for Manchester United EFL
“He was the first to congratulate me when I broke the record at Stoke EFL
He came in after the game with his wife EFL
He said congratulations – and a few more harsh words, jokingly EFL
He was a top human being which is more important EFL
”Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick, another former United player, said: “One particular memory that stands out was the 50-year anniversary of Munich EFL
He came into the training ground and spoke to us about the tragedy and what it meant to him EFL
That’s 45 minutes that I will never, ever forget EFL
”Charlton’s death means Sir Geoff Hurst is the only survivor from England’s 1966 World Cup final win over West Germany EFL
